Dublin/Leipzig-based rock duo Bicurious have revealed a new peek behind the curtain of their forthcoming album Your Life is Over Now… (4th October 2024, Big Scary Monsters) with new single 'Gutless'.

Drawing influence from Biffy Clyro, Reuben and Thrice, Your Life is Over Now... is a much more lyrical body of work than Bicurious’ previous material, as the band tread new sonic ground. Thematically, the album explores the various facets of the idea of family - including Bicurious' own fans, who crowdfunded over €9000 to help make the record.

On the new single, guitarist/vocalist Taran Plouzané comments: “'Gutless' is written from the perspective of a baby who’s in hospital, hooked up to IVs and fighting for his life. Being a baby, he has no idea what’s going on, all he sees is people running around him in a panic. 

“For the music video, we contacted our followers through email and socials and asked them to provide us with some footage of themselves singing the song. We were overwhelmed by the response and we managed to put together a super fun video that we’re really proud of. It was a fully DIY project, created largely by our fans. A lot of the people who donated towards the fundraiser are in there, too. I guess it ties in to this idea of family that we’ve been emphasising through this album process!”

Bicurious juxtapose spacey and rhythmic with heavy and delirious. Formed in 2016, Bicurious released their debut singles 'Sugar Beats' and 'T.O.I' in 2017, followed by their debut EP I'm So Confused - crowdfunded by fans via a fundraising campaign and a sold-out fundraiser gig. Released in 2018, Bicurious celebrated with a sold-out show at Whelan's, Dublin. The lead single from the EP, 'Sleep', has clocked up over three million streams on Spotify.
 
In 2019 Bicurious released the single 'I Don't Do Drugs, I Just Sweat a Lot', supported with UK and Ireland tours, and festival appearances at Knockanstockan, Vantastival, Electric Picnic and more in summer 2019. With momentum continuing, Bicurious' debut album (re)constructed was unveiled in July 2021, to critical acclaim from press and fans alike, including Metal Hammer, Prog Magazine and GuitarWorld.

(re)constructed thematically follows a timeline of events highlighting the members’ dramatic life changes in the three years leading to the release. The aftermath of the album release saw Bicurious perform at ArcTanGent festival in 2022 and 2023, Portals Festival and The Great Escape to name but a few. 

And now to 2024, with new label home Big Scary Monsters and second album Your Life is Over Now... The record, which was created over 18 months, three countries and five recording studios is testament to just how far this special, deliriously raucous duo, have come.

From Fall to Spring, a melodic new metal band from southwest Germany, began their musical journey with two self-produced EP's, A Better Tomorrow (2017) and Disconnected (2019), which quickly amassed over one million streams. VEILED commented: "We always try to channel a specific emotion or feeling with each release and this album invokes a feeling of sheer terror. We wanted an air of unease around the songs, playing with tension and really appreciating the power that silence can have. The format of an album gives us the time to build more of a story and experiment dynamically compared to a shorter release. The album allowed us to delve deeper into our more atmospheric and dynamic side. 

"Our second single, 'The Sentence,' is a song about a meeting with our leader after performing a ritual to summon him and how he can only help once they have given their life to The Sect. This track was chosen as a single because we wanted to showcase something faster and something without clean vocals. ‘Omen of Torture’ has a huge chorus, but we wanted to showcase all aspects of what VEILED can be. The video shows Kyle’s introduction to The Sect, everyone’s ritual is unique, and we felt it the right song to showcase his initiation due to the lyrical content.

"As a collective, we’re proud of how massive the album sounds. The pacing and track placements makes the album ebb and flow, helping to tell a story sonically, even instrumentally, without hearing the vocals you can feel the emotions that each track conveys. The stories we tell in our songs and videos have always been a large part of our songwriting and conceptual process. Even if a song doesn’t have a video, we always tend to write as though it will, having vivid visual imagery that goes along with the music. The album is an extension of this and a huge step up from our previous offerings. We try to keep the listener guessing as to exactly where a song or a story is going to take them.

"If you’re a fan of heavy music, then we know that we will have at least one song that connects with you. From our terrifyingly heavy songs to slower more anthemic-based songs. UK heavyweights Fates Messenger, comprised of members from renowned hardcore bands Romeo Must Die, Dishonour The Crown and Above All, have released a ferocious new single and video, 'They Walk Among Us'. 

Self-produced and recorded by guitarist Ron D, 'They Walk Among Us' emerges as a formidable track that exemplifies the band's hallmark intensity and unrefined energy. From the very first note, it offers an unyielding experience that captivates the listener. With its relentless onslaught of ferocious vocals, thunderous riffs, and monumental rhythms, this track serves as a profound testament to the band's artistic vision and intent.

“This was the first tune that Ron actually wrote once we started together,” comments vocalist Tony Maddocks. “We wanted to make it just really hard hitting and catchy. I think there's a groove to it, but it’s also got a really haunting melodic part that works really well and gives it a little bit more depth and feeling.

“Lyrically, the idea that came to my head for this song – I'd watched the HBO Stephen King series The Outsider which starred Jason Bateman [Ozark]. The idea that was sitting in my head was how evil forces or malevolent spirits were jumping from person to person, almost in a supernatural way, and manifesting themselves. And it ties in with all the sh*t that is going on in the world and what is making people tick and act like they do. You've only got to pick your phone up or turn on the news and there's just some horrific thing going on in the world.”

The accompanying video was shot by acclaimed filmmaker and director Shaun Hodson (Loki Films), whose credits include Lorna Shore, Architects and Sleep Token, at a disused airbase outside Peterborough.

“It was actually filmed in an old RAF base called RAF Upwood in Cambridgeshire. I did a bit of research afterwards and it had the American Air Force in it, the British Air Force in it through the Second World War, so quite a cool lot of history,” he explains.

“Basically, it's a derelict base, all falling apart, you know, and it really suited the tune. Shaun nailed it from the vision we wanted – really aggressive looking, a lot of quick edits, and very disturbing.”

Fates Messenger made their major London debut this summer supporting earthtone9 on the avant-garde metallers’ comeback show, which, says Tony, was an incredible experience.

“That was a big step forward for us. It went really well. And it kind of felt like the old days – everything was very tight and confidence was flowing. So now we're just looking to get out and play as much as possible.”

And while the quartet have only been in existence since November 2023, releasing a number of low-key digital songs to date, the collective pedigree and legacy within the UK’s metal and hardcore scene is strong.

Ron was a member of hardcore/crossover crew Dishonour The Crown – he, bassist Paul Fletcher and drummer Will Romain also played in Romeo Must Die, the band formed by ex-Stampin’ Ground frontman Adam Frakes-Sime, who toured with the likes of Sylosis, Bury Tomorrow and Unearth.

In the mid-1990s Tony fronted Essex hardcore crew Above All. Signed to the legendary Roadrunner label (Slipknot, Machine Head, Trivium), the band released one revered album – produced by Alex Newport – and toured the UK and Europe relentlessly, including shows with Fear Factory, Pitchshifter as well as opening for nu-metal titans Korn at their London Astoria show in 1996.

Tony then went on to form Light Of The Morning who released music via acclaimed musician and author Ian Glasper’s label Blackfish Records.

Fates Messenger are not however reliving past glories, they’re a band ready to embrace the modern metal scene with a fresh focus and eye on the prize of getting out to as many metal fans as possible.

“For me personally, I just wanted to release the music that I am really proud of,” says Tony. “As much as I love what I've done with Above All, I really cringe when I listen to my delivery. I was kind of growing up in the headlights and developing my voice at the time and I didn't really get to a point where I was very happy with it. Whereas now that I've got older, it's definitely helped me to develop my vocal style.

“We've all fallen back in love with music since lockdown and sometimes you realise you do miss certain things in your life. I think I've taken what I had before and I've really learned to run with it. We're just trying to make it all work together, Fates Messenger has given us a new lease of life.”

Guitarist Kie von Hertzen comments on 'Ascension Day': “This one was written on a small island in Eastern Finland, right next to the Russian border on a crisp April morning. On the islets around the island, there was a huge cormorant colony and you could see many sea eagles soaring above the island in search of prey.

"The work-in-progress title for the song was ‘Bruce’ as the whole song is pretty much based on an uplifting riff, simple melody and a chord progression which somehow reminded me of ‘Born in the USA’.  The storyteller has finally come out of the darkest place and is fulfilled with unrestrained compassion, love and gratitude for everything around him. Just being able to walk down the street on an average Monday makes him feel on top of the world as that’s been something unthinkable up until the very moment described in the song.”

New album In Murmuration follows the profound and epic journey of their acclaimed, pandemic-era masterpiece Red Alert in the Blue Forest (2022).

In true Von Hertzen Brothers style, In Murmuration creatively juxtaposes the band’s previous release. Whilst their imaginative, multi-genre hard rock and harmonies remain, the band’s artistic pendulum has swung more towards an air of optimism and renewal. The result is a work filled with big choruses, stadium rock anthems, art-rock with 90s vibes and catchy power-pop.

Whilst the themes within the album may not be as deliberately opinionated as on previous releases Red Alert in the Blue Forest and War is Over, there is a naturally occurring sense of constant change throughout. Precise and intriguing observations on the global political landscape, the tricky human relationships of this age, resilience and personal growth all provide lyrical subject matter. The first half of the album embodies a transformation of mood, bringing forth some positivity and love, and the second half journeys through challenging relationships, a literal call for change, separation, loss, longing and a final resolution.

Vocalist/guitarist Mikko von Hertzen says: “The shapes and the overall tone of the musical content on this album could be a bit surprising to some of our newer followers, but not to those who have been listening to us from the beginning. Musically speaking, we have proudly carried the cloaks of ‘prog-wizards’ for the last two albums, but what has not been so widely discussed lately is our ability to write good pop choruses and great catchy rock anthems with good vibes. We felt like it was now time to bring forth that side of us once again. The lyrical themes still deal with the everyday struggles of being humans in this f*cked up world, it’s a source that keeps on giving, but we wanted to step out of the forest and into the sunlight to mingle, discuss and celebrate. We live in an age of constant change where everyone is trying to find a secure footing in life, sometimes full of joy and sometimes filled with utter disappointment. Amid all that, the trick is to stay alert and lean to one another. Like starlings in murmuration. After the pandemic, and now as the world has once again opened, we have somehow felt lighter in our everyday lives. We acknowledge the contradiction of course, since the world with its horrors hasn’t changed much… It would have been easy to drown in those doomsday moods, but writing these songs we felt the need to tackle these problems from a more forgiving and positive standpoint.” 

From the anthemic opener to the reflective closer, In Murmuration ebbs and flows much like the starlings after which it is named.

The instrumentation on this album has also evolved. The three brothers Mikko, Kie and Jonne, with drummer Sami Kuoppamäki, are joined by multi-instrumentalist Markus Pajakkala, who performed with the brothers on their acoustic tour in 2023. Notable for his saxophone solo on 2022's 'Peace Patrol', Markus brings a new dynamic to the album. Guests on the album include a gospel ensemble and the Budapest Art Orchestra.

Now in their 23rd year, Von Hertzen Brothers have consistently delivered music on their own terms and In Murmuration is no exception. This is their third self-produced album, the others being the award-winning Approach (2006) and War is Over (2017).

The band, fronted by Craig Johns Jr. with guitarist Alan Ashby (Of Mice & Men), alongside Derek Vautrinot on drums and Nick Goins on bass, are already making waves. Released by the independent label Arising Empire - home to metalcore upstarts thrown and previously to While She Sleeps - this debut signals a bold new entry into the heavy music scene.

'Chemicals' paints an apocalyptic vision of the end of the world through the eyes of two lovers. While the entire world is falling apart, two people choose to solely focus on each other and allow the world to collapse into ashes around them.

The band comment: “Influenced by 90’s bands like Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Fudge Tunnel and Filter, 'Chemicals' felt like a natural choice for our first single."

Singer Craig Johns Jr. continues: "It’s something I’m less than proud of, but this story of two lovers focusing on each other while the world falls apart… This comes from a very real place I’ve found myself in in the past. There have been times where I’ve wrapped myself in things like lust and drugs, rather than facing the harsh reality of living in poverty in a major city like Los Angeles. Sometimes it’s easier to obsess over what’s in front of you, an easy escape, whether it’s a partner or a substance, and end up willfully blind to the bigger picture. Heavy new Swiss band Vicious Rain have unveiled their latest single, 'Hysteria' ft Half Me, which is taken from their highly anticipated debut album, There Is Beauty In Letting Go out on 11th October via Arising Empire.

Fronted by vocalist David Häusermann, guitarist and vocalist Mauro Gugerli, guitarist Tristan Meier, bassist Loris De Notaristefano and drummer Michael Teufelberger, Vicious Rain continue to carve their mark on the alternative music scene. 

Each new single from the band marks a significant step in their ascent within the music industry. 'Hysteria', delves into the tumultuous chaos and emotional upheaval of a relationship where two people are passionately in love yet painfully aware of their incompatibility. With its raw energy and heartfelt lyrics, 'Hysteria' captures the intensity of confronting difficult truths and the emotional whirlwind that accompanies the decision to part ways. It beautifully illustrates how love, even when it leads to separation, forges an unbreakable connection between those involved, leaving a lasting impact that resonates long after the final note.

Formed in late 2022, Vicious Rain are an alternative metalcore band from Baden, Switzerland. The group combine intertwined singing/screaming vocals with anthemic singalongs, screaming melodic leads and crushing breakdowns, as they embrace everything from the heavy side of the genre all the way to the more intimate melodies. The band‘s spirit is marked by their shared belief in the importance of solidarity, and the role of the individual accomplishment of a common vision. Lyrically, the Swiss quintet wholeheartedly express their stance on personal matters, while highlighting their belief that self-reflection is the key to growth.
